Making Your Home Smell Like the Holidays, Safely and Naturally

on Nov 22, 2016

The holidays are a time filled with family and friends coming together to share memories and to make new ones. These memories are comprised of many things; sights, sounds, tastes and smells. For many the smells of the season are present in the forms of baking and cooking in the kitchen, wreaths hung around the home, and for many store-bought air fresheners. The problem is that these air fresheners most often contain chemicals and irritants that are not only bad for the environment but also bad for people with lung issues, such as asthma, and allergies.
We have some helpful tips that will help anyone who wants the smells of the seasons around their home without the worry of harmful side effects.
Boil a pot of water on your stove and drop in some natural herbs and spices from your cabinet that evoke thoughts of the season. Cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise paired with citrus notes from orange peels can do just that! You can also play around with some of your favorite herbs like rosemary.
Buy a warming tray designed for wax melting and instead purchase some natural wax or even sugar cubes and place them on the tray. Drop some essential oil, such as peppermint or mint, on to them to create a vibrant holiday scent. Just be sure to watch them and change out regularly, especially when using the sugar cubes, else they may burn.
Homemade potpourri can be placed in bowls or hidden in little muslin sacks around the home to emit the smells of the season. Simply use dried versions of your favorite herbs, spices, and vegetation (including fruits), just be care where you place them so that you don’t get little critters sneaking in to eat it!
If you have a fruit bowl in your home, try filling it with citrus and poking some whole cloves into the rinds of the fruits. The combination is wonderful and very appropriate for the season and will last for days.
