5 Tips To Help Your Mattress & Bedding Last Longer

on Mar 25, 2019

Our beds are where we lay the cares of the day to rest, and put our heads down for sleep. However, if you want your bedding to take care of you, then you need to take care of it. For most of us that means regularly changing the sheets, fluffing the pillows, and rotating the mattress from time to time, but if you want to go the extra mile, here are some bedding tips you need to keep in mind.

Tip #1: Invest In A Good Mattress Topper

If you want your mattress to live a long life, then one of the best things you can do is get a mattress topper. These handy coverlets go under your sheets, providing an extra layer of cushion between you and the mattress. They add to your comfort level, but just as importantly they can protect your mattress from stains, extra wear, and other unwanted things. While you might have to replace your topper when it wears out, they are far less expensive than replacing a worn-out mattress, and you definitely get your money's worth with these accessories according to Bedding Stock.  Consider our Plush Latex Mattress Topper, which provides additional plushness and support and takes the immediate pressure off of your mattress, too.

Tip #2: Wait As Long As You Can To Wash Your Sheets

When your sheets need washing, you shouldn't hesitate. However, the more you wash your sheets, the shorter their lifespan will be according to Queen Bee of Honey Dos. An easy way to do this is to put the fitted sheet on a bed, and then to put the flat sheet over that, tucking it in at the edges the same way you would a normal sheet. Then, if the flat sheet starts feeling less-than-fresh, you can either replace it with a cleaner one, or just remove it and sleep right on the fitted sheet instead. This spreads out the wear, and makes it so that you aren't always washing the same, fitted sheet until it gets ragged.

Tip #3: Clean Your Mattress Regularly

All of us wash our sheets, our blankets, and our pillowcases... but do you clean your actual mattress? According to Mattress Inquirer you should clean your mattress at least once a month (which is also an ideal time to rotate it to ensure even wear). You should vacuum it to get rid of dust, dirt, and accumulated debris, and if you want to suck up extra moisture at the same time you can sprinkle it with baking soda first, then vacuum it away.  If you have any issues with stains, check out this recent blog post in our My Green Blog discussing cleaning tips.

Tip #4: Keep Your Bedding Together

When it comes time to wash all your bedding, put it in a separate load just for sheets, blankets, pillow cases, etc. While they'll get just as clean washing them as part of a general load of laundry, everything from being put into the machine with harsher fabrics, to catching on zippers and buttons, can do damage to your bedding. You'll get better results, and help your bedding last longer, if you just wash them all on their own on laundry day.

Tip #5: Fluff Your Pillows With Dryer Balls

If your pillows could use a good fluffing to get them back to ideal softness and comfort, throw them in the dryer with four or five dryer balls - an alternative to the more traditional method of using tennis balls. Make sure the pillows are already dry (this can have disastrous results if they're wet, or even damp), and let a gentle cycle run. The dryer balls will rearrange all the stuffing, and get your pillows back to how they were when you first started using them. Don't over stuff the dryer for this one, either; both the pillows and the dryer balls need plenty of room to move around in order to get to fluffing.
